Just 10 days ago, Franklin girls\u2019 lacrosse nipped Bishop Feehan, 9-8, in overtime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On Saturday, the 12th-seeded Panthers paid another visit to Attleboro and the No. 5 Shamrocks, this time in the second round of the Division 1 tournament, once again left victorious, 11-8, making Feehan the highest-seeded team from any sport to falter thus far. The Panthers got six goals from senior captain <b>Izzy Cross<\/b>, and <b>Clara<\/b> <b>Blongastainer<\/b> scored twice, pulling her within two goals of 100 for her career. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe kind of felt like an underdog, but also knew we were capable of winning,\u201d said Franklin coach <b>Kristin Igoe<\/b>. \u201cSo we don\u2019t really care about being the 12-seed, honestly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span>Related<span>: <\/span><\/span>Varsity News: Your five-minute playoff primer<\/div>\n<p><span>\u25aa In the does-it-even-count category was No. 17 North Reading boys\u2019 lacrosse taking down No. 16 Nauset, 11-10, in a Division 3 matchup after rallying from down, 8-2, in the first half. <b>Brendan Gazda<\/b> notched a hat trick, <b>Tony <\/b> <b>Tammaro<\/b> added 5 points (two goals, three assists), and freshman <b>Brayden Carlson<\/b> picked the perfect time for his first two career goals. <\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h2>2. Four stars<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span><b>Brady Banks<\/b>, Bourne\/Mashpee \u2014 The Belmont Abbey-committed senior from Bourne compiled 6 points, scoring three goals with three assists in a 15-1 boys\u2019 lacrosse first-round win over Mt. Coaching carousel<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Several prominent coaches are retiring:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u25aa <b>Mark Baldwin<\/b> will be retiring as one of the state\u2019s winningest baseball coaches when Hampshire\u2019s season ends. The 39th-seeded Raiders, who already upset No. 26 Upper Cape, face No. 7 Seekonk in the first round. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Baldwin won 198 games at Northampton, the most in school history, but his heart was always at Hampshire, where he was a three-sport athlete (\u201982) before returning as baseball and soccer coach in the 1980s, basketball coach in the 1990s, and basketball, golf, and baseball coach since 2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Overall, Baldwin coached 33 years of high school baseball \u2014 26 at the varsity level, including nine at Hampshire. His teams made 20 postseason appearances, won two league championships, and reached two Western Mass. semifinals. He helped the Eagles reach the tournament in all eight seasons, capturing the 2024 Catholic Conference title and a Division 1 semifinal appearance. Chen\u2019s final game was Thursday\u2019s 3-2 preliminary-round loss to Somerville. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u25aa Also retiring is longtime Wachusett swim coach <b>Jochen Welsch<\/b>. Welsch, who was inducted into the Eastern Massachusetts Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association Hall of Fame in May, coached the Mountaineers for 25 years. <\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h2>4. Commitment central<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Bellingham junior <b>Sophia Soto<\/b> has committed to play women\u2019s volleyball at Central Connecticut State.
