The Sox don\u2019t know when Anthony will be back.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s not Roman\u2019s fault; none of that is anybody\u2019s fault,\u201d Tracy said before Friday\u2019s 4-3 loss at the Guardians. \u201cIt\u2019s just, he got hurt and it\u2019s a nagging injury on a hand when he\u2019s trying to hit, so we have to be patient with that. After he returned to Boston and was examined by doctors, the Red Sox hoped he would avoid the IL. When he advanced to hitting off a tee, it felt worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe fact of the matter still remains: He\u2019s got something in there, and if there\u2019s discomfort, we just have to wait,\u201d Tracy said. \u201cDid we want it to go quicker? Yeah, but we can\u2019t control the healing. If he\u2019s got discomfort, we gotta wait. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSo is it gonna go longer than we originally had hoped and thought? Team president Sam Kennedy said on WEEI last week that \u201cthere\u2019s no evidence of a tear.\u201d The Red Sox referred to it as a sprain when he went on the IL.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI know stuff came out yesterday about tear versus sprain versus strain and all these different things,\u201d Tracy said. \u201cI don\u2019t know what else to say other than a sprain is a tear.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<h2>Narv\u00e1ez keeps going<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p><span><b>Carlos Narv\u00e1ez\u2019s<\/b> right middle finger remains bruised and swollen, but he said he can play just fine when it is taped up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He injured the finger on a slide May 15 in Atlanta. Specifically, the problem is inflammation in the top knuckle, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s either rest [on the IL] or play through it,\u201d Narv\u00e1ez said. \u201cIt won\u2019t get worse.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span>Related<span>: <\/span><\/span>How Ceddanne Rafaela earned his spot higher in the Red Sox batting order<\/div>\n<p><span>Last year, Narv\u00e1ez played through left knee pain that wound up being a torn meniscus. He toughed it out until having surgery \u2014 but only after the season ended. He doesn\u2019t anticipate another surgical situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI don\u2019t think this is going to be the same,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<h2>Whitlock\u2019s outlook<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p><span><b>Garrett Whitlock<\/b> (left knee inflammation) also didn\u2019t join the Sox in Cleveland. He is eligible to return June 9, but it\u2019s too soon to know if that will happen. \u201cI hope that it goes quickly and it\u2019s the minimum (stay on the IL),\u201d Tracy said. \u201cBut we have to see how he responds to the [pain-killer] shot over the next few days, and then hopefully he\u2019s back up throwing quickly. But again, another situation, we have to see how he responds.\u201d \u2026 <b>Nick Sogard<\/b> has a \u201cnagging\u201d right side issue, Tracy said, thus his absence from the lineup. It bothers him in particular when hitting lefthanded. \u201cIt just felt like maybe it\u2019s prudent to not push that,\u201d Tracy said. \u201cAnd [<b>Caleb Durbin<\/b>] had a nice day swinging the bat [the day prior], so it\u2019s like, let\u2019s just give that a day and let Durbin get out there and play.\u201d \u2026 <b>Mickey Gasper <\/b>started behind the plate for a third time in four games, and went 2 for 4 with a run scored \u2026 Tracy sharing part of the speech he gave to the Sox in honor of <b>Willson Contreras<\/b> reaching 10 years of service time in the major leagues this week: \u201cI\u2019ve been around long enough to know how hard it is to get one day in the big leagues, let alone stick around for 10 years.
