One of Boston\u2019s newer cybersecurity firms, three-year-old 7AI, recently celebrated hiring its 100th employee. Now cofounder and chief executive Lior Div says he\u2019s going to double his workforce by the end of the year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Div, who previously founded security firm Cybereason and sold a controlling stake to Japanese investment firm Softbank in 2023, said the fast-expanding capabilities of artificial intelligence apps in the hands of hackers have created massive demand for 7AI\u2019s services. The Back Bay-headquartered company uses AI-powered agents to help companies and government agencies sort through millions of digital interactions a dayacross their computer networks and uncover hacking attacks. <\/span><\/p>\n

The firm\u2019s best sales pitch may have come from California AI giant Anthropic, which said last month it could not let the public use its newest, most powerful AI model, called Mythos, because the chatbot was too good at finding security vulnerabilities that crooks could exploit, even in older software that has been available for decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThe demand is just crazy,\u201d Div said. His prior company \u201cwas growing very fast, but we never saw this level of demand from the market. I can smell that something very, very different is going on here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The security freak-out Anthropic sparked also sent the shares of larger, publicly traded cyber companies such as Crowdstrike and Palo Alto Networks up almost 50 percent over the past month.<\/span><\/p>\n

The new employees, to be hired mainly for 7AI\u2019s Boston office, will include software engineers, product developers, and marketers, Div said. The company has the funding to cover the new hires after raising $130 million in December, one of the largest venture capital deals for an early-stage cybersecurity company ever.<\/span><\/p>\n

AI tools such as Anthropic\u2019s Claude Code programming app have dramatically cut the time it takes 7AI to roll out new features, from months to a single day in some cases, Div said. But the company still needs more people. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cClaude Code can write code for us but you still need the smartness of people to direct Claude what to write,\u201d he said. <\/span><\/p>\n

At a recent meeting in Chicago, a customer showed 7AI engineers a security report that took 10 hours to produce. Overnight, an engineer was able to have an AI coding tool automate the production of the report. \u201cThat\u2019s the rate of innovation that we\u2019re talking about,\u201d Div said.<\/span><\/p>\n

This year, 7AI also joined the new private-sector effort called the Massachusetts AI Coalition to encourage more AI startups to form in the Boston area. The coalition is already holding dozens of educational and training events and offering support and mentoring to founders.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere was this notion that you have to be in Silicon Valley or New York to build a cool company,\u201d Div said. \u201cNow we\u2019re proving that Boston is an unbelievable city to build these types of companies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
