See highlights.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>Months later, Maria Menounos was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor. Then with Type 1 Diabetes. Then with pancreatic cancer. Then she developed liver lesions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAnd infertility. And a couple of other health conditions,\u201d the Medford native, 47, said in a recent phone interview from her Connecticut home.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>\u201cIf you\u2019ve followed my journey over the last decade, you know it\u2019s been a health journey. But it pushed me into this arena where I\u2019ve had to focus on my health in a way that I never did before.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Emmy-winning TV journalist and personality \u2014 seen on \u201cExtra,\u201d \u201cEntertainment Tonight,\u201d \u201cE! News\u201d \u201cThe Today Show\u201d and more \u2014 founded Heal Squad x Maria Menounos, a daily podcast. Menounos calls it a \u201chealth and wellness\u201d series and podcast. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Menounos will host a sold-out \u201cHeal Squad Day of Reset\u201d at Red Jacket Beach Resort South Yarmouth<u> on<\/u> May 16, billed as a one-day \u201cimmersive experience designed to help you regulate your nervous system and reset your physical and mental health.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><span>Get Starting Point<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><label>Enter Email<\/label><\/p>\n<div><button>Sign Up<\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>While the former Emerson College student still keeps her feet in acting \u2014 from a cameo in Prime\u2019s \u201cThe Boys\u201d (Season 2) to Lifetime\u2019s \u201cChristmas at Plumhill Manor\u201d \u2014 her focus is now on her health. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Her Instagram bio says she\u2019s \u201con a health &amp; wellness journey doing my best to help people on theirs.\u201dAnd her Website homepage is dedicated to \u201chelping you be the CEO of your health.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYou need to be the CEO because the [medical] system is overwhelmed,\u201d she said. \u201cIt saved my life. It\u2019s incredible. I have incredible doctors, and we need them. But they\u2019re also overwhelmed, and the system is not kind to them, either.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>She knew something felt off, but a colonoscopy, endoscopy, and CT scan were all clean. So she went for a full-body MRI, which found a Stage 2 pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor, a rare form of pancreatic cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI knew something was wrong, and nobody could figure it out. Even with a CT scan, they missed a two-centimeter mass on my pancreas. It was a journey to figure it out,\u201d she says. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>She\u2019s been candid about her journey, documenting the highs \u2014 talking about the birth of daughter Athena via a surrogate \u2014 and lows, such as when her diabetic dad and cancer-battling mother both had COVID while Menounos had a brain tumor, a story she tells in a YouTube Video. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In an interview, we talked about her health, her mission, and her love of Dunkin\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><b>You said the last 10 years have been a \u201chealth journey.\u201d Tell me about your event on Cape Cod.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>My podcast, \u201cHeal Squad,\u201d was born out of necessity to help my mom and help myself, and by that same token, help others. Last August, we did our first Heal Squad event at Canyon Ranch [a four-day event in Lenox] and people found it to be valuable. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I thought to myself: I have contacts over the last 30 years \u2014 whether I was doing stories about health on \u201cThe Today Show\u201d or wherever it was \u2014 and was connected to the best of the best. I do have unique access; I know who moves the needle. So let\u2019s do a one-day event [on the Cape] where we can help people reset their nervous systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I\u2019ll give them exposure and access to the modalities that have helped me, to the modalities that have helped others, the practitioners that I constantly prescribe to people when they come to me and they have an issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>[For example] I have a friend who was diagnosed with Bell\u2019s Palsy, I went into my brain-Rolodex, and I\u2019m like, \u201cWho do I know?\u201d So when you know the right people, you can make an impact on health very quickly. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/bostonrelocationinsider.com\/?p=1197\">Joe Kriesberg leads the charge at MassINC to address income inequality<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span><b>This is an event for women.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I think women in general, we often take care of ourselves last. We have so many things on our plates, our nervous systems are <i>so <\/i>wrecked, we need a break.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><b>You said this health journey started with your mom\u2019s brain cancer. But your dad had diabetes when you were growing up.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Yeah, it\u2019s been a journey forever in a sense. My dad was Type 1 diabetic, with the language barrier, which made it very challenging. He\u2019d have low-blood sugar attacks all the time. Then my mom was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2016, and then I was diagnosed a few months later in 2017 with a benign brain tumor called meningioma. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><b>And the brain tumors weren\u2019t due to anything genetic?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>No. They said it was like lightning striking [twice]. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><b>How did you get through that period of your life?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I\u2019m not going to say it\u2019s easy. The brain tumor \u2014 at that time, I was going against my grain. We get caught up in old dreams. We get caught up in a version of success that\u2019s maybe not authentic to who we<i> are<\/i>, and is maybe more authentic to what Instagram is sending us. I was tired. I was like, \u201cWell, if this is it, it\u2019s been great. I\u2019m out.\u201d I was so tired of that life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And what I realized is this was an invitation to my true life, to my true calling, and to a higher purpose and passion, and that\u2019s what this [journey] has become. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I\u2019m grateful for all the disappointments up until then, things that didn\u2019t work out. Even today, I was just walking on the beach saying, \u201cThank <i>God <\/i>those things never happened, or I\u2019d be trapped in a life I didn\u2019t want.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><b>You were also diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Yeah, that was after the brain tumor. I have Hashimoto\u2019s [an autoimmune disorder affecting the thyroid gland] \u2014 there\u2019s so many other things \u2014 but diabetes was the first thing after the tumor. Then pancreas cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The pancreas cancer was terrifying. I had a baby on the way via surrogate. I didn\u2019t know if I was going to get to meet her. Luckily, God gave me a second chance. And a third chance, and probably more chances. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><b>You say traveling helps you?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I\u2019d been diving deep into the health benefits of the equator. I think sunlight is really important. I think grounding and circadian rhythm is really important.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>My husband [Keven Undergaro] will bring me back to earth sometimes, because I can float away with these concepts and ideas, because I\u2019m trying everything. I\u2019m experimenting. He\u2019s like, \u201cMaria, all the green juice in the world isn\u2019t going to heal you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><b>True.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He\u2019s like, \u201cYou\u2019ve got to fix what\u2019s inside.\u201d And he\u2019s right. You\u2019ve got to fix what\u2019s inside. We\u2019re complicated machines. All you can do is try, and when you know better, like Maya Angelou said, you do better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><b>So overall, what\u2019s your goal with \u201cHealth Squad\u201d?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>My goal is to keep sounding the alarm to everyone that they need to be the CEO of their health. Your health has to be your responsibility \u2014 not just with everyday choices, but with the overall management. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><b>You\u2019re spending more time in New England now, splitting time between homes in Connecticut and LA.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Coming back home to my roots has been really beautiful. I\u2019m a Massachusetts girl, always. I love that Athena gets to be with family. I\u2019ve really fallen in love with New England all over again. January through April is brutal, and I probably won\u2019t partake in those months. \u2026 But otherwise, I\u2019m in love.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><b>I read you used to work at Dunkin\u2019?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Six years. Loved it. Still do.
