Red Sox infielder Trevor Story to be sidelined for weeks after undergoing sports hernia surgery
Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story had surgery Thursday to fix the sports hernia that had bothered him since spring training, the Red Sox announced Friday afternoon.

When he went on the injured list last week, Story said that doctors told him it usually takes 6-10 weeks to return after the operation. That would put his return anywhere from July 3-31.
In his absence, the Red Sox called up utilityman Nick Sogard and have mulled moving second baseman Marcelo Mayer to shortstop, his natural position. In recent days, the Sox had been waiting to make a decision on Mayer until they knew how long Story might be out.
With clarity on the Story front, moving the 23-year-old Mayer back to shortstop is the most likely outcome. He had been practicing there when the Red Sox visited the Royals this week.

For Story, 33, this is the third surgery in five seasons with the Red Sox. He previously missed extended periods because of elbow and shoulder operations. His six-year, $140 million deal runs through 2027.
Story has struggled at the plate and in the field this year, a major regression from what wound up being a solid 2025. He was batting .206 with a .244 on-base percentage and .303 slugging rate when he went on the IL.
Dr. William Meyers, a renowned core muscle expert, performed the surgery at The Vincera Institute in Philadelphia.
