The all-time Massachusetts kills leader highlights 11 high school sports takeaways from Thursday
Massachusetts has a new all-time boys’ volleyball leader in kills.
Wayland senior Finn Bell, already a two-time Globe Athlete of the Year, slammed down 34 kills during a 3-2 win over Newton North, sending him past Cambridge’s Jalen Penrose for the career mark.

Penrose, who went on to play at Penn State, set his mark in 2013, and it stood for 13 years until Bell wrapped up Thursday’s five-setter with 1,429, and he still has the postseason to extend his record.
That was just one of several highlights from Thursday, which included a pair of no-hitters, multiple one-hitters, a 250th coaching win, a Division 1 men’s basketball commitment from a Top 10 recruit, Latin Academy capturing a second-straight Boston City League crown, and more conference hardware handed out.
Even with the regular season winding down, we enjoyed some big matchups, such as No. 1 BC High over No. 3 St. John’s (Shrewsbury) in baseball, No. 4 Acton-Boxborough over No. 3 Mansfield in boys’ lacrosse, No. 2 Dighton-Rehoboth slipped past No. 10 Bridgewater-Raynham in softball, and No. 8 Chelmsford taking care of business vs. No. 20 Westford in boys’ volleyball.
