Wednesday’s 11 high school sports takeaways, including a TMC meeting and 400th coaching win
The final day of regular-season matches for boys’ and girls’ tennis and girls’ lacrosse, also marked what is likely the final 300-plus game day of the season. Here at Globe Schools we wrote about more than 100 of those games as we barrel toward the playoffs.

Among the highlights are a pair of no-hitters, a 400th coaching win, a 500th lacrosse save, a 600th softball strikeout, plus no less than nine league champions were crowned.
The morning started with a virtual meeting of the MIAA’s Tournament Management Committee, which discussed the future of alignments, and we continue to breeze through collegiate awards season for local stars.

5. Going, going, gone
You’ll read more about her in the next section, but Milton Academy senior Sophia Crowley has to lead off this section after a three-homer day that included a grand slam. Her teammate and sister, Hannah, also left the yard.
Greater New Bedford got long balls from Janiah Cooper, Khloe Pereira, and Akiira’ley Vazquez, Tyngsborough enjoyed blasts from Kiley Hogan and Kirstin Deschenes, and Southeastern’s Isabelle Troncoso and Camrynn Precourt both raced for inside-the-park homers.
The rest of the days round-trippers belonged to Wakefield’s Chloe Seto, Bridgewater-Raynham’s Leyla Medas, Medford’s Jonathan Wright, Amesbury’s Celia Tavares, Haverhill’s Gianna Pistone, Medway’s Jackson Duguay, Cambridge’s Stef Alexandrov, and Franklin’s Ethan Edmunds.
6. Ten stars
Cole Arruda, Seekonk — The senior sat down 13 batters via strikeout as he one-hit Dighton-Rehoboth in a 7-0 baseball win.
Ellie Bennett, Falmouth — The sophomore struck out nine and added three hits and a run to support her own cause in a 5-3 softball victory vs. Nantucket.
Joe Coughlan, Sandwich — The senior fired a one-hitter, striking out eight over seven innings for a 2-1 baseball win over St. John Paul II.

7. Coaching carousel
After 10 seasons at the helm, this will be the final postseason run for Winchester girls’ tennis coach Greg Lowder. A tennis pro at the Winchester Indoor Tennis Club, Lowder led the Red & Black to an undefeated season and Division 2 title in 2021 after reaching the finals in 2018 and 2019. He has Winchester sitting at 19-0 entering the postseason.
▪ A Hockomock League athletic director is changing addresses as Gary Hart moves from King Philip to Franklin, where he will take over for Karrah Ellis, according to Hockomock Sports. Brown has been AD at KP since 2017. Ellis had held her position since 2022.
8. TMC ponders new formula
Since the statewide tournament was introduced in 2021, the top 32 power-seeded teams in non-football sports, plus those teams with a .500 or better record, qualify for the postseason. Will the MIAA raise the bar, to say a 55 or 60 winning percentage?
“My opinion has changed,” said Andy Linkenhoker, superintendent at Smith Vocational in Northampton, and chair of a subcommittee to look at tournament structure. “I am now open to making it more strict,” he said. In an 18-game schedule, a team would need to win 10 games, instead of nine, to hit 55 percent, and 11 games for 60 percent.
The TMC will continue that discussion, and more tweaks, with an eye on the 2027-28 alignment cycle.
▪ The TMC also approved a shift in the girls’ lacrosse season to match the boys’ season after the five-day difference in cutoff days was giving athletic directors scheduling headaches.
▪ The football committee will present its new playoff format, which includes a Super 8 tournament, at the June 9 in-person TMC meeting.

O’Connor was also named the CAA Co-Pitcher of the Week after firing a three-hit shutout to beat Towson.
