Globe Top 20 softball poll: With major tests, there’s a few minor shakeups

A number of the state’s top teams faced major tests over the past week, and as a result, the Globe’s Top 20 softball poll has a number of shakeups.

No. 1 Taunton and No. 2 Dighton-Rehoboth cemented their places atop the rankings, with the Tigers topping No. 5 King Philip in extra innings for the second time this season and the Falcons claiming back-to-back games over No. 8 Somerset Berkley and No. 4 Joseph Case.

No. 3 Norton steamrolled No. 12 Hopkinton Saturday in its final big challenge of the regular season, and No. 6 Central Catholic maintained its standing as Eastern Massachusetts’ only unbeaten team after pulling out a tight win against Billerica on Wednesday.

No. 9 Attleboro dropped three spots following a 10-1 loss to Franklin on Wednesday, and No. 16 Georgetown fell two spots after suffering its first loss of the season to Wakefield in nonleague action. Newton North reenters the rankings at No. 18 after winning its past five games, including a 21-1 rout of Bishop Feehan last Tuesday.
