Sources: Red Sox to place newly acquired infielder Curtis Mead on injured list

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Newly acquired Red Sox infielder Curtis Mead is heading to the injured list.

According to major league sources, the Sox will place Mead on the injured list Tuesday, one day after he got drilled on the base of his left hand/wrist by a 95-mile-per-hour fastball from Athletics starter Jack Perkins. Mead stayed in Monday’s game for one inning, then left prior to the bottom of the fifth inning.

Initial X-rays at Sutter Health Park were negative, leaving interim manager Chad Tracy optimistic that the Red Sox “may have dodged a bullet.” But further evaluation Tuesday led to the decision to place Mead, acquired Saturday night from the Nationals for Connelly Early, on the injured list.

With Mead sidelined, the Sox are expected to call up Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester. With the Sox on the West Coast, Sogard (a Sacramento native) is unlikely to join the team until Wednesday.
