It wasn’t how they drew it up, but the Red Sox pulled off a 4-2 win over the Athletics Monday night, thanks to an improbable grand slam from Ceddanne Rafaela that barely cleared the wall in the sixth inning.

“I thought it was an out,” said Rafaela “I didn’t hit it the way I wanted to, but I hit it enough to go out.”

It was the outfielder’s first grand slam and came after the Sox were held without a hit through the first five innings by righthander Jack Perkins.

It was a fine way to open a seven-game road trip, and it extended their winning streak away from Fenway Park to 10 games.

“I think we have fun playing in front of the crowds that don’t want us to win,” said Rafaela.

The Sox will send lefthander Jake Bennett to the mound when they continue their series with the A’s Tuesday night. The Athletics will counter with lefthander Gage Jump.

He has walked just nine batters in 59⅓ innings over 10 starts. … The Sox could be without newly acquired Curtis Mead, who exited Monday’s game after being struck on the left wrist by a pitch in the fourth inning.
