Six HS sports takeaways, including an MLB signing, coaching moves, and a bevy of college commitments

Takeaways returns from a two-week sabbatical during which we saw Bishop Feehan graduate Brody Bumila sign for $2.75 million with the Rangers and immediately undergo Tommy John surgery, Boston Latin graduate Packy Naughton’s retirement from Major League Baseball at age 30, and former MIAA stars Evan Blanco (Austin Prep) and Javar Williams (Dartmouth/Tabor) selected in the MLB Draft.

Even in the dog days of July, the high school news keeps flowing. On Thursday, it was former Berkshire School soccer standout Jack Harrison, a three-time NEPSAC champion, signing with the Revolution. Here are six takeaways:

While Williams (11th round out of Wake Forest) and Blanco (13th round out of Tennessee) were both selected by the Athletics in the MLB Draft, another former MIAA star is getting his shot at the big leagues.

Thomas Shurtleff, a 2022 Medfield graduate who played four years at Penn, signed a free-agent contract with the Angels last Friday. As a senior, the 6-foot-2-inch righthander struck out 52 in 61 innings with a 2.95 ERA for the Quakers.

A two-year football co-op between Triton and Ipswich has been approved, with Triton hosting the team and home games played in Byfield.

This means no Thanksgiving day showdown between Ipswich and Hamilton-Wenham, while the new co-op will face Pentucket, Triton’s traditional rival.

The Ipswich Tigers Football Boosters said they were not consulted.

Harvard senior Thomas O’Brien, a Reading graduate, was named to the 2026 FCS Football Central Preseason All-America second team. He was also named to the Stats Perform Preseason All-America third team. The 6-foot-6-inch, 310-pound offensive lineman allowed zero sacks while earning All-Ivy First Team honors last season.

▪ Duxbury rising senior Colin Murray announced his commitment to play football at Bowdoin. The 6-foot-5-inch, 220-pound defensive end and tight end also plays lacrosse.

▪ Central Catholic rising senior Drew O’Keefe posted his commitment to play football at Williams. The first-team Merrimack Valley Conference selection is a 5-10, 200-pound wide receiver, safety, kicker, and punter.

▪ Bishop Feehan rising senior Colin Wilson has committed to play baseball at Bentley. The 6-4, 190-pound righthander also plays for the GBG Northeast Hawks.

▪ Acton-Boxborough rising senior Alice Rosecan, a 5-3 infielder, has committed to play softball at Colby. She also plays for Raiders softball.

▪ Weston rising senior Luke Betty will play men’s lacrosse at Gettysburg. The 6-foot attack also plays for Laxachusetts.

▪ Joining Betty in Gettysburg will be Milton Academy rising senior Will Chisholm, the son of Celtics owner Bill Chisholm. From Cohasset, the younger Chisholm is a 6-foot middie who also plays football.

▪ Worcester Academy’s Addy Cheney, a rising junior from Sandwich, is committed to play women’s soccer at Boston University. The center forward also plays for the FC Stars.

▪ Annabelle Lovell, a Hingham resident who plays for Lovell Academy, announced her commitment to play women’s hockey at Wisconsin. A member of the US 2024 and 2025 Under-18 team, the 5-3 forward will join the nine-time national champion Badgers.

▪ Phillips Andover rising junior Marie Lee has committed to play women’s hockey at Princeton. The 5-8 goalie, originally from Canada, also plays for the Boston Americans.

▪ Dexter Southfield rising junior Maggie Chudzinski has committed to play women’s hockey at Harvard. The 5-foot-7-inch defender from Needham also plays with the Boston Junior Eagles.

▪ Dexter Southfield girls’ hockey teammate Annabelle Aitken, a Winchester native who also plays for the Boston Junior Eagles, has committed to Middlebury.

▪ Dexter Southfield rising senior Charles Carpenter-Simms, a Worcester resident, has committed to play football at Delaware. The 6-foot-2-inch, 195-pound defensive back is rated as a three-star recruit by Rivals.

▪ Dexter teammate Nathan Brou, a 6-5, 325-pound lineman and rising senior from Medford, is headed to Richmond to play football.

▪ Milton Academy rising senior Miles Desrosiers announced his commitment to play baseball at UMass. The 6-foot-1-inch, 200-pound catcher also plays with the New England Nor’easters.

▪ Rivers rising senior Jalen Morris, from Hyde Park, has committed to play football at Marist. At just 5-6, 165 pounds, the running back was named NESCAC Class C Player of the Year after compiling 1,219 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns.

▪ Northfield Mount Hermon rising senior Zariah Ottley, who hails from Stoughton, has committed to play basketball at Boston University. The 5-7 guard also plays for the Bay State Jags.

▪ Berkshire School rising senior Pearl Dickson has committed to play women’s basketball at Niagara.

▪ Austin Prep rising senior Gabbie McLaughlin, who hails from Lexington, announced her commitment to attend RPI and play women’s lacrosse. The 6-foot midfielder/attack also plays for the Storm Black.

▪ New Hampshire announced five incoming local players joining its men’s and women’s soccer teams. On the men’s side, Wrentham’s Sean Cory has committed as a keeper. Cory played in MLS NEXT for four seasons and spent the 2025-26 season as a member of the New England Futbol Club. He was a member of the Revolution Academy from 2022-24.

The Wildcats’ women’s team is adding four Massachusetts players in its incoming class: Sandwich’s Megan Jakubicka, Mendon’s Riley Restic, Lynnfield’s Kayla Smyrnios, and Weymouth’s Molly Tufts.

Jakubicka, an attacking midfielder, played five years at Sandwich, and also plays for the Scorpions SC. She has also been a member of Slovakia’s U17 and U19 national teams. Restic led Nipmuc to a Division 3 state title in 2024 and plays for NEFC. Smyrnios led Pingree to a pair of NEPSAC championships and four EIL titles and also played for NEFC. Tufts was a four-year player at Weymouth who also competed for Scorpions SC.

▪ North Quincy has promoted assistant Greg Sommers to head football coach. A 2002 alum, Sommers previously spent 14 seasons as an assistant at Quincy, where he also led the softball program for 10 years.

Sommers will look to turn around a Raiders program that hasn’t enjoyed a winning season since 2010. Last year, under Ryan Craig, North Quincy started 4-2 before finishing 4-7.

▪ Phillips Andover has turned to former Governor’s coach Ceci Reyes to helm its girls’ basketball program.

Originally from Lawrence, Reyes starred at Governor’s and Merrimack before playing professionally overseas in the Dominican Republic. As an assistant, she helped Brooks to a NEPSAC Class B championship. Reyes also serves as GM and tournament director for Hardwood Hustle.

▪ Former Randolph girls’ basketball coach Ashley Barron Munoz is taking over the Sharon program.

Barron Munoz succeeds Matt Dellabarba, who left for Norton after four seasons with the Eagles. Barron Munoz attended Sharon schools through her freshman year before transferring to St. Johnsbury Academy in Vermont.

She played at Middlebury, then spent three seasons as an assistant at Beaver Country Day School, helping them to a 25-0 season and NEPSAC Class C title in 2013. She coached Randolph from 2016-20, and spent the last four years with the Sharon Travel Basketball Association.

▪ Pingree has tabbed former Peabody and Arlington Catholic girls’ hockey coach Michelle Roach to helm its girls’ hockey program.

Roach had a 139-59-13 record over 10 seasons at Peabody, capturing five Northeastern Conference titles and earning MIAA Coach of the Year honors in 2021. A former player at St. Michael’s, she also coached Arlington Catholic for one season and coaches Peabody girls’ lacrosse. She works as a human resources director in the Reading district.

▪ After 28 years at Andover, including the last four as athletic director, Wayne Puglisi is moving over to Winchester, where he will serve as AD. Puglisi coached lacrosse and football at Winchester from 1994-98.

▪ Millis welcomed Michael Rector as its new athletic director. Rector arrived from Westwood, where he served as assistant athletic director. He was previously the AD at New Heights Charter School in Brockton.

▪ Two Massachusetts products will compete in this weekend’s NECBL Home Run Derby. Anthony Ruggiero, a Nipmuc graduate from Mendon who recently transferred from Northeastern to Rhode Island, will compete for Mystic, and North Adams’s Jake Gladu, a Pittsfield resident who played at Canterbury and will be a freshman at Franklin Pierce, are both slated to participate Sunday in Sanford, Maine.

▪ The National Federation of High Schools announced that one of the 10 changes recently approved for girls’ lacrosse allows states to adopt a 90-second possession clock starting in 2027.

A 90-second shot clock has been experimented with in New York the last two years. The new rule gives states the option to implement the measure to help reduce stalling and increase the pace of play.
