Patriots place edge rusher Harold Landry on physically unable to perform list ahead of training camp

To open training camp, the Patriots placed edge rusher Harold Landry on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list and running back Terrell Jennings on the non-football injury (NFI) list.

Neither player is cleared to practice, which begins on Saturday, but can be activated at any time. If they remain on the list following the roster cutdown deadline (6 p.m. on Aug. 30), they will be required to miss at least four games.

Landry did not participate during the voluntary offseason program throughout the spring, as he continued to rehab a knee injury that hampered him at the end of last season. Coach Mike Vrabel said in June that Landry was still “very heavily involved” in meetings and workouts despite not practicing on the field.

“For him to take reps right now in the spring, I feel like, is unnecessary,” Vrabel said. “We will just keep working to make sure that he is ready to go when we need him.”

Landry’s status is still worth monitoring, given New England’s lack of depth at edge rusher. Second-round pick Gabe Jacas remains unsigned, after missing the entirety of the spring. The defense’s top two options on the edge are veteran Dre’Mont Jones and second-year player Elijah Ponder.

Jennings, meanwhile, is in a positional battle for the third running back spot behind Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson. He will be competing against Lan Larison, seventh-round pick Jam Miller, and undrafted rookie Myles Montgomery.
