Ahead of Saturday’s MLB Draft, Brody Bumila is dealing with left elbow injury
Brody Bumila, a recent Bishop Feehan graduate who is projected as a possible first-round pick in Saturday’s Major League Baseball Draft, is dealing with an injury to the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.

Per an initial report from Baseball America, and confirmed by the Globe’s Peter Abraham and Alex Speier, Bumila’s adviser texted officials of every MLB team Monday morning, revealing damage to the same elbow that kept Bumila off the mound as a junior, when he had internal brace surgery. Teams are hoping he’ll upload imaging into the MLB portal so their team doctors can review the situation before the draft.
This spring, the overpowering 6-foot-9-inch lefthander dominated with an electric fastball that reached 100 miles per hour. He struck out 108 in 46 innings, allowed just eight hits and seven earned runs, and fired a 20-strikeout no-hitter against Moses Brown (R.I.) in May as the Shamrocks stormed to the Division 1 state final.
He was the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year and the Globe’s Will McDonough Male Athlete of the Year.
But his velocity dropped in his final starts during the MIAA state tournament, including an abbreviated two-inning outing in the final, a 13-4 loss against Catholic Memorial at Polar Park on June 13.
It’s unclear how any injury would affect his draft positioning. Committed to the University of Texas, a drop in the draft could lead the Raynham resident to join the Longhorns instead. ESPN reported that Bumila would likely not pitch in 2027 if he heads to Texas.

Bumila did not pitch in 2025 after needing internal brace surgery on the same elbow. He came back in his senior year, first leading the Shamrocks’ boys’ basketball team to a state title before dazzling on the mound in the spring.
The Globe named Bumila its Male Athlete of the Year last month, and the lefty also earned state Gatorade Player of the Year honors.
On the basketball court this past winter, Bumila averaged a staggering 41 points, 20 rebounds, and 3 blocks per game in the Division 1 tournament as the 14th-seeded Shamrocks captured their first state title.
ESPN’s latest mock draft had Bumila being selected at No. 27 by the New York Mets, which would have been the highest selection for a Massachusetts native since Lexington’s Sal Frelick (Boston College) went 15th overall in 2021. It would be the first first-round selection of a Massachusetts high school player since Phillips Andover’s Thomas White went 35th in 2023.
