Willson Contreras, Cade Cavalli get seven-game suspensions for roles in Red Sox-Nationals brawl Tuesday
The main combatants of Tuesday night’s incident between the Red Sox and Nationals that resulted in the dugouts clearing learned their fate Thursday.
Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras and Nationals righthander Cade Cavalli each received seven-game suspensions.
After striking out in the fourth inning, Contreras took exception to Cavalli screaming at him to, “Sit down, boy!”
Cavalli recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts over seven innings in Washington’s 8-1 win.
Speaking before the Nationals’ 10-2 win Wednesday, Cavalli expressed remorse in yelling at Contreras. Cavalli had taken exception to Contreras brushing against him earlier in Tuesday’s game while returning to the dugout.

During the skirmish, Contreras was being held back but threw his helmet at Cavalli.
Nationals righthander Miles Mikolas received a five-game suspension and Red Sox outfielder Nate Eaton was suspended for three games. Neither player was involved in the game.
Contreras was also ejected Monday night for arguing a strikeout Monday night, making him the first player in Red Sox history to be tossed in consecutive games.
Players can remain on the active roster pending any appeals.
