After devastating twin earthquakes struck Venezuela, Patriots kicker Andy Borregales is doing what he can to support relief efforts for his home country.

Borregales — who was born Caracas, Venezuela’s capital, before moving to South Florida — spent part of his week at Global Empowerment Mission’s headquarters in Doral, Fla., where he and his wife, Stephanie, assisted with managing the influx of donations for those in need.

“I have my sister [in Venezuela],” Borregales told a Miami-Fort Lauderdale TV station. “Thank God she’s OK, but a lot of families aren’t. Since we physically can’t be there right now, which sucks, at least we’re still helping out in any way that we can.”

Venezuela is navigating the aftermath of earthquakes that killed more than 1,700 people. Tens of thousands remain missing, according to the government, with the death toll expected to rise.

“There isn’t really one thing that isn’t in need,” Borregales said. “Not many people have a shelter to go back to, a home to go back to, because it’s just all rubble now. Anything helps, really, even if it’s just a bottle of shampoo or a box of waters. Whatever it is, anything helps.”

Red Sox players Wilyer Abreu, Willson Contreras, and Carlos Narváez, who were born in Venezuela, also have taken part in relief efforts. The players were among those collecting donations outside of Fenway Park ahead of Sunday’s game against the Yankees.

Borregales and his wife, too, have directed people to donate.

“If all you can donate is a box of soap, that’s enough,” he said.
