Pieces come together for youthful Scituate as it repeats as Division 3 boys’ lacrosse champion

WORCESTER — The stands at Worcester State’s John F. Coughlin Memorial Field were largely Dracut-dominated for Saturday’s MIAA Division 3 boys’ lacrosse state championship, but on the field, it was all Scituate.

The third-seeded Sailors became back-to-back champions with a 7-4 victory over the top-seeded Middies, marking the fourth title in program history.

“I think we really didn’t know what we had until the season got going,” said Scituate coach Mark Puzzangara. “We knew we were talented, but were we this talented? The pieces came together, and we saw a lot of incredible development by a lot of our young kids, and those were the ones that got us over the hump.”

The game was effectively won in the opening minute, when senior midfielder Luke Spaulding made it abundantly clear whose game it was.

He sniped the opening goal 54 seconds in, then won the ensuing faceoff and netted a second just seven seconds later.

“We always say, ‘Win the first five minutes of the game,’ and today we did exactly that,” Spaulding said. “Just huge to get a lead, and from there we kept it and just tried to possess the ball.”

Dracut (21-2) kept things close in the first half, but its attack didn’t have any answers for a stout defense for Scituate (17-7) in the latter half.

Despite holding plenty of possession, Dracut’s rotational passing seldom led to scoring chances. The Middies put just 10 shots on goal, making life manageable for Scituate senior AJ Reimels (six saves) in net.

Sophomore attack Ace Smith and freshmen James O’Brien and Jake Monahan tallied twice each for the youthful Sailors.
