MIAA spring state championships live updates: Saturday’s slate opens with tennis and boys’ lacrosse

It started Wednesday evening and runs through Saturday night, 31 state champions will be crowned in six MIAA sports: lacrosse, boys’ volleyball, baseball, softball, rugby, and tennis.

The boys’ lacrosse finals are at Worcester State, the D1 boys’ volleyball final will resume at Hopkinton, the baseball finals are at Polar Park, the softball finals are at Worcester State, and the tennis finals take place at MIT.

Newton North wins Division 1 boys’ tennis title — 11:30 a.m.

Newton North 3, Newton South 2

It all came down to third singles, where Alex Fine won it in three sets for the Tigers.

Scituate adds to early lead — 11:20 a.m.

Scituate 3, Dracut 0, 5:30 1st quarter

It’s Ace Smith this time as the Sailors are in control early.

Spaulding puts Scituate ahead early — 11:10 a.m.

Scituate 2, Dracut 0, 10:00 1st quarter

Luke Spaulding scores, then wins the ensuing faceoff and scores again. Pretty good start for the Sailors.

Wastcoat ties it up for Newton North boys — 11:07 a.m.

Newton North 2, Newton South 2

After Newton South swept doubles, Newton North captures the first two singles results, with Johnny Wastcoat winnning in three sets at No. 1.

The state title will come down to Newton North’s Alex Fine vs. Newton South’s Graham Horine at third singles. Horine leads third set 4-2.

Newton South takes first point in D1 girls’ tennis final — 11:05 a.m.

Newton South 1, Boston Latin 0

The Lions won second doubles for the first point of the match.

The D1 boys’ final is coming down to a pair of third sets at No. 1 and No. 3 singles. Newton North’s Johnny Wastcoat leads Newton South’s Yoni Shavelsky, 5-2, at No. 1, and Newton North’s Alex Fine leads Graham Horine, 2-1, at No. 3.

Division 3 boys’ lacrosse final pits Dracut and Scituate — 11:00 a.m.

Top-ranked Dracut is making its first championship appearance after three trips to the semifinals in recent years.

No. 3 Scituate is playing in its third straight D3 title game and is looking to repeat after beating Falmouth, 9-4, last year.

No points yet in D1 girls’ final — 10:50 a.m.

Newton South vs. Boston Latin

No. 1 singles: Olivia Whitaker (NS) up a set and up 2-1 in second.

No. 2 singles: Manel Guermazi (NS) took first, down 1-2 in second.

No. 3 singles: Nika Presayzen (NS) took first set.

No. 1 doubles: BL took first, down 5-2 in second.

No. 2 doubles: NS up a set and trailing 3-2 in second.

Newton South sweeps boys’ doubles — 10:42 p.m.

Newton South 2, Newton North 1

Ben Hong and Neal Zota picked up the Lions’ second point of the day with a win at first doubles, but Newton North’s Collin Hwang won second singles in the Division 1 boys’ tennis final.

Newton South boys pick up first point — 10:30 a.m.

Ezra Levy and Akshay Sayana-Dudani picked up a point at second doubles for a 1-0 lead for Newton South in the D1 boys’ final. In the other matches:

No. 1 singles: Johnny Wastcoat (NN) took the second set 6-3. One set all.

No. 2 singles: Collin Hwang (NN) up 5-2 in the second. One game away.

No. 3 singles: Graham Horine (NS) up a set and 3-2

No. 1 doubles: NN up 6-5 in second

The tennis championships are off and running at MIT — 10:00 a.m.

Up first are the Division 1 finals for boys and girls.

On the boys side, it’s a Newton showdown between No. 4 North (18-2) and No. 6 South (17-4), while on the girls side it’s top-seeded Newton South vs. No. 3 Boston Latin.
