By Trevor Hass, Globe correspondent
WELLESLEY — Drenched in water, after his players crept up behind him and poured gallons on his head, Walpole girls’ lacrosse coach Mike Tosone took a moment to catch his breath.
Not just from the shower, but also from a chaotic final few minutes to a storybook season for an unflappable team.
In an epic battle with countless twists Wednesday night at Babson College, Walpole outlasted Reading, 12-11, to cement its second consecutive Division 2 title.
“I’ve been around a long time,” Tosone said. “I’ve coached a lot of sports, a lot of years, played a lot of sports. It might be some recency bias, but this is the best [game]. This is unbelievable. Truly.”

Concord-Carlisle overcomes injury, early deficit to go back-to-back in Division 1 girls’ lacrosse — 9:00 p.m.
By Trevor Hass, Globe correspondent
WELLESLEY — Swarmed by her Concord-Carlisle girls’ lacrosse teammates after scoring one of the signature goals in program history, senior standout Sarah Fortier disappeared in the mosh pit momentarily.
Then, she emerged from the pack to sprint to the other side of the field. She had to find sophomore goalie Mamie Kosicki, whose 13 saves kept the Patriots afloat against Notre Dame (Hingham) in the Division 1 girls’ lacrosse championship. Fortier also had to find injured teammate Scarlett Mirak, whose firepower and guidance helped make this moment possible. Lastly, she had to find her classmates and parents to cherish the celebration with them.
Fortier will forever be the hero, as her goal with 1 minute, 28 seconds left in overtime lifted No. 3 Concord-Carlisle to a 10-9 Division 1 state championship triumph Wednesday night, the Patriots’ second in a row. But the Middlebury-bound catalyst knows it takes a village to go back to back, and that unselfishness prepared her for an individual moment of brilliance.

By Trevor Hass, Globe correspondent
As the final seconds disappeared Sunday night, Concord-Carlisle senior Sarah Fortier dropped the ball to the ground, hoisted her stick in the air, and danced in the pouring rain with her teammates.
With star Scarlett Mirak sidelined late in the third quarter, the defending Division 1 champion Patriots leaned on their depth, poise, and mental fortitude to find a way past Chelmsford, 6-5, in a semifinal at Weston High.
“That was just so insane,” Fortier said. “The mental power that our team had to do that is unlike any other.”
Mirak led the way with two goals, and Fortier, Lindsay Cain, Hannah Feloney and Bridget Fivek added one apiece for the No. 3 Patriots (19-3).

By Trevor Hass, Globe correspondent
Sunday’s semifinal showdown followed the blueprint Westford Academy envisioned initially. But Notre Dame Academy (Hingham) adapted and proved it could win a gritty, defensive-minded battle.
