Cohasset flips the script in title-game rematch, capturing Division 3 girls’ lacrosse championship

WELLESLEY — Three-hundred-sixty-four days ago, members of the Cohasset girls’ lacrosse team sat in disbelief on the MacDowell Field turf after everything they had built toward slipped through their fingers.

The Skippers knew they had the firepower, chemistry, and grit to finish the job this season, but they learned the hard way last year that nothing is guaranteed.

Now, after a 9-6 victory over rival Norwell in the Division 3 state final at Babson College on Thursday, the Skippers can breathe a collective sigh of relief. The full-circle redemption arc is complete, and the heartbreak they endured in last year’s D4 final, at the hands of Norwell, made the ultimate glory even more gratifying.

“We went into the season knowing we never wanted to feel that feeling that we felt again,” said Cohasset senior defender Addy Andrews. “This entire season, all 25 games, we’ve built toward this moment.”

Bucknell-bound senior Avery Regan paced the No. 1 Skippers (23-2) with three goals. Cohasset led, 6-4, at halftime, and 7-5 through three after a timely goal from UMass-bound Kate Greer.

The No. 2 Clippers (18-5), playing without Syracuse-bound junior Lexi Davos (hip), sliced it to 7-6 on a goal from Charlotte Maguire. Cohasset then reached another level with Regan and Northwestern-bound Molly Campbell leading the charge.

Cohasset played five-on-seven for a significant portion of the game, with goalie Janet O’Carroll, Andrews, Libby Struzziero, Campbell, and Zoe Evans masterfully executing a zone defense.

“I’m so proud of them,” Greer said of her defense. “I’ve been proud of them all season.”

The Skippers thumped the Clippers by 12 goals a few weeks prior, but they knew they couldn’t sleep on them with everything on the line.

The teams have now met in the postseason 10 times in the last 12 years, with eight of the meetings decided by three goals or fewer. It’s the fourth title for Cohasset, including 2017 and 2019 titles in D2.

“In a state final, you’re going to have battles,” said Cohasset coach Kara Connerty, who previously coached Norwell. “Every team that makes it that far is going to be a terrific team, and it’s going to be hard fought. That’s what it was.”

Last year, they met in the Division 4 final. This year, they met in the D3 final. Next year, no matter which division they’re in, there’s a solid chance they’ll meet again.

For now, bragging rights lie with the Skippers.

“It means so much to both sides to want to beat the other, so it’s fun,” said Norwell coach Jess Davos. “It’s tough tonight to be on the losing side of it after winning last year, but I’m sure we’ll be back and do it again next year.”
