Ipswich boys’ lacrosse forfeits Division 4 State semifinal against Cohasset
The Ipswich boys’ lacrosse team forfeited Tuesday’s Division 4 state semifinal game against Cohasset, scheduled for a 6 p.m. start at Scituate High, for reportedly breaking the MIAA’s chemical health rule.
The violation occurred Sunday, following graduation ceremonies, and included smoking cigars. Ipswich graduated a class of 113 seniors, 12 of whom are members of the varsity lacrosse team.
In a statement posted on the school site, Ipswich said it was very excited to advance to the semifinals, but the team and coaching staff decided that, due to a shortage of available players, it was in the best interest to forfeit the game.
Seeded fourth in the division, the Tigers (14-4) rattled off tournament wins over Tyngsborough (18-1), Lunenburg (17-1), and Winthrop (14-8).
Cohasset (16-5), the top seed which was in Scituate awaiting Ipswich’s arrival, will play No. 2 Nantucket (18-3) — 8-4 winners over Manchester Essex in Tuesday’s first scheduled game at Scituate High — in the state final at Worcester State Friday or Saturday (day, time TBA).
