Sure, the US men’s national team might be an obvious choice for most Globe readers. But the Americans enter the quadrennial competition on rocky footing, and may not get much further than the group stage.

There are stars in their prime and legends maybe a bit past. Teams making their first World Cup appearance (hello, Cape Verde!) and teams that you’ve come to expect on this stage.
