“Somerset Berkley holds a special place in my heart,” Sousa said in a statement. “The soccer program played a major role in my life and helped shape the path of my career. I’m honored for the opportunity to give back to a community that means so much to me and help student-athletes grow both on and off the field.”

Sousa serves as the assistant goalkeeper director for NEFC South and has coached within MLS NEXT. He spent nine seasons at Wheaton, reaching the national quarterfinals.

10. Here and there

▪ Like Bishop Feehan before it, St. Mary’s is opting to leave the Catholic Central League in most sports. The Spartans will remain independent members of the MIAA.

Athletic director Jeff Newhall noted the school already played an independent football schedule, and 14 of its 20 boys’ hockey games were against nonleague opponents.

“This will not be a major change in some sports,” he said in a statement. “This decision is designed to give us flexibility in scheduling and provide enhanced opportunities for our student-athletes and their families.”

St. Mary’s has won a state title in at least one sport for 19 consecutive years, with its boys’ basketball team capturing the Division 2 title in March.

“Going fully independent removes any restrictions from how we can schedule,” Newhall said. “And we still have the option to play CCL teams. Bishop Feehan left the league last year and we are still playing them in almost every sport.”

▪ After 96 Thanksgiving football meetings with Dedham, Norwood has entered into a two-year agreement with Oliver Ames, according to Hockomock Sports. The Tigers will host in 2026, followed by the Mustangs.
