In the fifth inning of her final home game at Attleboro High, the senior sent a two-strike fastball over the left-field fence for a three-run homer, doubling the margin as the third-seeded Blue Bombardiers barreled to a 10-0 Division 1 quarterfinal win over No. 6 Bridgwater-Raynham on Saturday afternoon.
“I’m feeling so over the moon,” said Borges. “I didn’t even know I hit the home run, I thought it was going to hit the fence.”
In its first semifinal appearance, Attleboro (17-6) will play No. 2 Central Catholic (22-0). B-R finishes 14-8.
“It’s such a cool experience, to know that this has never been done before, and to know that I was a part of it,” senior ace Jenna Callahan said.
Callahan was more than just a part of it. She tossed a shutout, striking out six and stranding 10.
“I was able to trust my defense, because it’s not just the pitching,” said Callahan, who induced weak contact to get out of jams.
Freshman catcher Rayna Bennett opened the scoring with a third-inning RBI single. The next hitter, junior shortstop Lola Ronayne, drilled a two-run bomb, her 12th of the season, and 100th career hit.
Attleboro plated four more runs in the sixth, courtesy of three hits, two walks, and a hit by pitch.
