While it was a light slate Friday, there were still several head-turning results, most notably sixth-seeded Newton South boys’ tennis taking down two-time defending champion and top-seeded St. John’s Prep, 3-2, and Duxbury girls’ tennis sending home two-time defending Division 2 champion Longmeadow.

1. Milestones
▪ Cohasset senior attack Tim Donovan surpassed 200 career points with four goals and two assists in a 19-6 Division 4 boys’ lacrosse quarterfinal win over Bourne/Mashpee.
2. The upsets
▪ As noted, in what is probably the most stunning result of any spring tournament thus far, Newton South boys’ tennis went into Danvers and took down the five-time defending Division 1 champs, 3-2.
“It was a pretty dramatic scene at the end,” said South coach Matt Timmins. “Tied at 4-4, they got the break, and Akshay [Susana-Dudani] served it out for the match. It was awesome … we felt like a million bucks.”
The Lions swept doubles play, with Ben Hong and Neal Zota winning at first, and Ezra Levy and Susana-Dudani emerging at second, both in four sets. Graham Horine added the Lions’ only singles win, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3.
▪ Despite being defending Division 1 champions, Newton North boys’ volleyball entered the tournament as the No. 12 seed with a 6-11 record. The Tigers have now won three in a row, including a 3-1 upset of fourth-seeded Chelmsford in the quarterfinals. Led by Aaron Stein’s 17 kills, Newton North rallied after dropping the first set to take the next three.
▪ While technically not an upset since Duxbury girls’ tennis was seeded third and Longmeadow was No. 11, it still felt that way as the Dragons took out the two-time defending Division 2 champions, 4-1, thanks to a singles sweep from Seneca Sapia, Sophia Smith, and Ella Towse.
3. Going, going, gone
There were five softball games Friday, and four featured a homer. Joseph Case senior Cailyn Durand put her team ahead with a two-out, three-run blast off the center fielder’s glove in the bottom of the sixth; Georgetown’s Elizabeth Barbarick crushed a towering solo shot; Malden Catholic’s Ryleigh Jones connected for a three-run, first-inning blast; and Advanced Math and Science’s Ava McLeod dialed up a three-run, first-inning dinger.
4. Ten stars
Madi Carpenter, Shepherd Hill — The junior spun a four-hit shutout, walking one and striking out the side four times during an 8-0 Division 2 softball quarterfinal.

Cailyn Durand, Joseph Case — The senior’s only hit of the day was the biggest, blasting a three-run homer to center field to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead and eventually a 5-2 victory over Greater New Bedford in the Division 3 softball quarterfinals.
Maddie Grant, Georgetown — The senior fired a four-hit shutout, striking out 10 in a 5-0 Division 5 quarterfinal blanking of Monson.
Gus Greene, Cohasset — The senior produced a whopping 10 points (five goals, five assists) to power past Bourne/Mashpee, 19-6, and into the Division 4 boys’ lacrosse semifinals.
Ezra Levy and Akshay Susana-Dudani, Newton South — The senior No. 2 doubles duo needed to produce a point to upset top-seeded and two-time defending state champion St. John’s Prep, and that’s exactly what they did. After dropping the first set, 6-1, they rallied to take the next two 6-3 and 6-4, leading to a 3-2 Division 1 quarterfinal triumph.
Neva Matos, Old Rochester — In a season-ending 4-1 girls’ tennis loss to Dover-Sherborn in the Division 3 quarterfinals, the senior was a 7-6, 6-3 victor at first singles, meaning she finished undefeated on the season.
Ava McLeod, Advanced Math and Science — The junior made the difference in a 5-0 Division 4 softball quarterfinal, belting a three-run homer in the first, adding an RBI single in the second, and tossing five hitless innings.
Owen Quinn, Scituate — The senior had a hand in seven of his team’s goals during an 11-6 Division 3 quarterfinal victory over Shawsheen, scoring three times and assisting on four others.
Chloe Salerno, Central Catholic — The junior recovered from a rough first inning in which she allowed a three-run homer, following it up with six hitless innings and finishing with 10 strikeouts in a 6-3 Division 1 softball quarterfinal.
5. Gatorade POY
Taunton shortstop Bella Bourque will have a shot at winning two Gatorade Player of the Year awards after capturing the honor as a junior following an explosive offensive season for the 20-1 Tigers.
The 5-foot-8-inch Bourque batted .589 with 34 RBIs and 22 extra-base hits through 21 games. She has 42 runs, 12 steals, and a whopping 1.686 OPS. A three-time state champion and two-time Globe All-Scholastic, she’s committed to South Carolina.
“She leads by example, works hard, and has had a great work ethic all year,” said Taunton coach Michell Raposo. “She’s done a really good job this year working on her hitting and emphasizing hard, line-drive contact. Bella has been clutch and consistent throughout her career for us, but particularly this year.”
