Stoneham’s defense locked onto Lakey, however, as he already scored seven times. But it allowed freshman Casey Wallwork to cut behind the cutter and receive a pass from junior captain Cam McDonald before burying the winning goal with three seconds left, lifting the 16th-seeded Vikings to a 12-11 win over the No. 17 Spartans (8-11) in the first-round of the Division 4 boys’ lacrosse tournament.
Triton senior long-stick midfielder Hugh Rice was all over the field and continued to make a huge impact after missing last year following ACL surgery. Roger Williams-bound senior pole Liam Cummings led the defense and sophomore Tyler Laky added two goals and one assist.
“The kids were thrilled,” McWilliams said. “They struggled last season and they’ve bought in wholeheartedly this year, legitimately. We finished quarters well, which has been has been a struggle for us. That’s foundational for a program if you can get the kids to play four quarters, at any level, but particularly if you’re still trying to earn your stripes.”
The Vikings (7-10) will face top-seeded Cohasset in the second round on Wednesday.
Abington 15, South Hadley 5 — Lee Spry (three goals, three assists), Gunner Hanna (four goals), Tate Eriksen (goal, two assists), and Matt Grafton (three goals, assist) led the sixth-seeded Green Wave (14-5) to a first-round victory.
Hamilton-Wenham 16, Cape Cod Tech 9 — Zach Sachel (four goals, two assists), Billy Brown (two goals, three assists), Reid Faldi (two goals, three assists), and Leo Tratnyek (three goals, assist) led the offense with junior middies Anthony Folger and Andrew Wilbur adding two goals apiece to give the ninth-seeded Generals (12-5) a first-round win. Junior long-stick middie Kyle Russo had a standout performance in all phases.
Manchester Essex 17, Wahconah 3 — Luke Renzi netted a hat trick and won the battle at the faceoff-X, setting up multi-point efforts from Turner Valeo (two goals, two assists), Bodin Carovillano (two goals, assist), Jack McCavanagh (goal, two assists), and Noah Cohen (two goals, assist) to pace the third-seeded Hornets (15-3) in a first-round home win.
Nantucket 15, Monomoy 0 — Nolen Mosscrop fired in four goals and Noah Stringer and Marco La Chuisa both netted hat tricks for the second-seeded Whalers (16-3) in a shutout first-round win.
Winthrop 13, Old Colony 1 — Seth Sacco, recently named Northeastern Conference Player of the Year, registered seven goals and two assists, Tomas Babine had a hat trick, Ace Daigneault posted 6 points (2 goals, 4 assists) and Matt Madalone dominated at the faceoff-X in a runaway first-round win for the fifth-seeded Vikings (16-3).
Division 1 State
Natick 6, Belmont 2 — Hayden Pinkham, Jonathan Chase, and Chase Flynn played lockdown defense in front of Cullen Wilson (12 saves), and Josh London posted a game-high three points (two goals, assist) to lift the No. 11 Redhawks (15-4) in a first-round victory.
Division 2 State
Billerica 17, Westfield 7 — Danny Venezia fired in five goals, Kam Tremblay posted four goals and three assists, Nate Telep had a hat trick, and Jace Campos and Jack Jones starred defensively for the top-seeded Indians (16-3) in a first-round win.
King Philip 19, Archbishop Williams 1 — Junior attack Charles Parish amassed five goals and four assists and junior attack Maddock Henderson had five goals and two assists to lead the eighth-seeded Warriors (14-5) in a first-round win.
Reading 14, Minnechaug 2 — Junior LSM Gavin Furness caused five turnovers and Ethan Filipski grabbed nine ground balls in a stellar defensive effort from the third-seeded Rockets (17-3) to advance to the state quarterfinals. Connor Wicken (two goals, four assists), Luke Johnson (four goals, one assist), Griffin Haggerty (one goal, three assists), and Nick Casarano (two goals) paced the offense.

Westwood 13, Sharon 8 — Senior middie Liam Williams (three goals, three assists) and junior attack Will Stuehler (three goals, two assists) paced the attack and Jaden Pollack made 14 saves to lift the 10th-seeded Wolverines (16-3) past the 23rd-seeded Eagles (7-13) in a first-round battle.
Division 3 State
Medfield 21, Tri-County 2 — Senior middies Liam Kane (five goals, one assist), Jackson Dodge (four goals), and Max Dunne (two goals) paced the fourth-seeded Warriors (13-5) to a first-round win.
Norwell 22, St. John Paul II 2 — Matt Panttila paced the second-seeded Clippers (16-3) to an early first-round win with two goals and six assists and Teddy Glynn added four goals. The No. 31 Lions (15-4) requested a 10 a.m. faceoff on Monday morning to account for their graduation scheduled later in the day.
Scituate 10, Pembroke 5 — Theo Hare netted a hat trick and Luke Geary and Owen Quinn tallied two goals apiece, lifting the third-seeded Sailors (13-7) to a first-round win over the 14th-seeded Titans (11-9) in a battle between Patriot League rivals.
Weston 11, Swampscott 6 — Sophomore attack Locke Simunovic (three goals, two assist) and sophomore middie Charlie Balz (three goals, assist) led six different scorers after senior Alex Palmer went 15 for 20 at the faceoff-X to set the table for the seventh-seeded Wildcats (16-1) in a first-round win over the No. 26 Big Blue (10-10).

Division 1 State
Chelmsford 16, Beverly 6 — Madelyn Callahan racked up five goals and four assists, and Mary Kate McDonald, Catherine Craig, and Anna Bierwirth had three goals apiece for the No. 2 Lions (16-4) in the second-round win.
Concord-Carlisle 19, Belmont 6 — Junior Scarlett Mirak’s seven goals lifted the third-seeded Patriots (16-3) to a second-round rout of No. 14 Belmont (12-6). Junior Vivi Myles added three goals, with senior Sarah Fortier and freshman Finley Walsh netting a pair of goals each.
Division 2 State
Bedford 16, Billerica 8 — Olivia O’Brien (five goals) netted her 200th career goal and Sophia Babington (four goals) reached 100 career points as the No. 6 Buccaneers (11-8) toppled No. 11 Billerica (9-11) in a second-round triumph. Sadah Luongo had a hat trick and Grace Collins added a pair of goals.
Division 3 State
Scituate 12, Medfield 11 — A tying goal from Bridget Ryan after trailing by three, followed by goals from Shea Sullivan (four goals) and Izzy Mae Adams (four goals) helped the No. 7 Sailors (13-7) put away the defending Division 3 champions No. 10 Medfield (13-8) in a second-round barnburner.
Newburyport 18, Ursuline 9 — Amelia Price (seven goals) and Blaire Fox (five goals, two assists) were an unstoppable tandem for the fourth-seeded Clippers (15-5) in a second-round triumph over No. 13 Ursuline (11-6).
Division 4 State
Nantucket 11, Bromfield 9 — Trailing 9-6 with five minutes left, Louisa Beni fired in the tying score for the No. 8 Whalers (16-2), then an own goal by No. 9 Bromfield (11-4) put Nantucket ahead as they pulled off a come-from-behind victory in the second round. “Louisa’s always a super strong player,” said coach Kelly Brown. “She’s all-in all the time, she never gets frustrated or angry in any way. She chips away. She timed her cuts so perfectly, she worked to get out of that face guard, she never gave up.” After Bromfield’s own goal, Grace Hanlon completed a hat trick with a goal to clinch the win for Nantucket. Following the comeback, Brown praised the tenacity her team had to get the win. “That’s really hard to do, not putting your head down in those moments,” she said. “They played so strongly as a team, they had each other’s backs. They stayed positive, never turned on each other, and that’s why we were able to come back.”
Lynnfield 22, Seekonk 11 — Hayden Valiton electrified the field with 11 goals and seven draw controls for the fifth-seeded Pioneers (12-8) over the No. 12 Warriors (13-5) in the second-round victory. Ava Damiani added seven goals and three assists.
Ipswich 15, Tyngsborough 2 — Ella McCarthy and Allie Wile each scored five goals to power the second-seeded Tigers (15-3) to a dominant second-round win over No. 15 Tyngsborough (11-7). Ella Schofield added a pair of goals with two assists and Natalie Elder followed with two goals.
