The 22nd-seeded Rangers struck for three runs in the top of the first, with Melaney Reyes belting a double off the wall in left for a run, and freshman Delaney D’Hondt went the distance, striking out seven, in a 7-1 first-round win in the Division 1 tournament at DeFazio Field.

In the third inning, Reyes (3 for 4) drove in another run with a double through the gap as Methuen (11-10) extended the lead to 6-0 over No. 11 Needham (14-3).

“It definitely eased their minds a bit to be able to go out there and play a little bit more relaxed when you got a lead for the pitcher,” said Methuen Jason Smith of the quick-strike hitting.

D’Hondt, who scattered four hits, got out of a jam in the fourth inning with bases loaded and no outs. After great defensive work by her teammates, D’Hondt struck out the final batter to end the inning.
