Canton girls cap greatest season with first Division 3 track title, Walpole boys win by thinnest margin
NORTH ANDOVER — For the Canton girls’ 4×400-meter relay team, the stakes were simple: Place in the top five, and secure the program’s first Division 3 state title.

“I told them before the race: ‘This is what you dream of, this is what you train for,’ ” said Canton coach Anna Amico.
Senior Chloe Dubuisson took control on the third leg, receiving the baton in third place and building a three-second lead by the end of her lap. Junior Lauren Raffetto followed with a dominant anchor leg to seal an eight-second victory in 4 minutes, 2.10 seconds.
The result pushed Canton (74 points) past runner-up Melrose (68) in Sunday’s Division 3 championship meet at Merrimack College. It capped a historic season for the Bulldogs, who also won their first Hockomock League crown in 43 years.
“It feels like all our hard work really paid off,” said Raffetto. “The group trained for this all season, and it all just came together.”
After building a 12.5-point lead during Day 1 Thursday, the Bulldogs added to their edge with first and third-place finishes from Raffetto (5:03.54) and sophomore Adileh Azar (5:11.49) in the mile. Dubuisson also placed second in the 100 hurdles (14.46).
“This is just a really, really special group,” said Amico. “[The results Thursday] definitely gave them the confidence that we belong, and then everyone just did their part to put us over the top.”
On the boys’ side, Walpole finished with 99.5 points to earn its third consecutive outdoor state title by a razor-tight margin over Reading (99).
The Timberwolves’ victory came down to the final javelin toss by senior Jake Stenstrom (166 feet, 4 inches), who notched a five-foot personal best to place third in the event.
“I was not expecting it to be the last event,” said Stenstrom. “But it feels amazing. I turned around and looked at the board, see 166, and it’s a great, great feeling.”
Walpole’s only victory Sunday came in the 4×100 relay (43.17), with its other win coming from senior Sawyer Regan (3,290 points) in the pentathlon on Thursday.
Stenstrom also finished second in the 110 hurdles (15.14) and senior Arnold Obour-Mensah was second in the 100 dash (10.70).
Longmeadow ran the fastest time in the boys’ 4×800, but was disqualified for throwing the baton after crossing the finish line. The Lancers placed third with 96.5 points.
After winning the 200 in a personal-best time (21.11) Thursday, Reading senior Ryan Pulpi entered Sunday with an ambitious plan: Compete in both the 400 and 100, which were scheduled just 25 minutes apart.
Pulpi paced himself in the 400, but still fended off his competition for a win in 48.97.
In the 100, Pulpi executed his start to perfection en route to a half-second victory (10.44). The effort was a 0.3-second personal best and marked the state’s top time this season.
“I knew there was not much time between the [400] and the [100] final,” said Pulpi. “So I had to preserve a little bit of energy . . . it was definitely a lot to balance, but happy it worked out.”
