Ayer Shirley girls pick up where they left off, Abington boys twinning at Division 6 track championships

After accumulating 33 points to take an early lead Thursday on Day 1 of the MIAA Division 6 outdoor track and field championships at Westfield State, the girls of Ayer Shirley kept up the pace in Saturday’s conclusion, taking home the state title with 71 points.

The girls scored 40.5 points last year for a fourth-place finish, then watched as their male teammates lifted the trophy. This year, a motivated Panthers squad outpaced last year’s girls’ champion, Mt. Greylock, which finished as runner-up with 55.5.

Roxane McKenzie and Lorelai Levy totalled five first-place finishes, all in personal-best times for Ayer Shirley.

McKenzie won the 100 (12.41 seconds) and 200 meters (25.8), and Levy championed the 100 (15.2) and 400 hurdles (1:04.86). Both helped the 4×100 relay team to a first-place finish in 49.94 seconds.

On the boys’ side, Abington emerged from the pack, taking the title with 76 points over second-place Clinton (52).

Brotherly love was on display for the Green Wave as the Calcano Da Silva twins ran neck-and-neck in the 400. Nathan Calcano Da Silva broke brother Aiden’s school record in the event with a time of 48.54 seconds, a new personal best by 1.6 seconds. Aiden finished just behind in 49.2 seconds, and added a win in the 400 meter hurdles (53.79).

Lucas de Oliveira cleared 6 feet, 4 inches to win the high jump for the Green Wave, which took the last event of the day, the 4×400 meter relay, in 3:28.21 to clinch victory.

Clinton junior Sean Blaze won the 100 (10.80) and the long jump (23 feet, 0.5 inches) as the day’s other dual champion.
