The Ayer Shirley girls and Abington boys became the first state champions of the spring (non-unified category) as they both captured D6 crowns.
Saturday also marked the 54th edition of the Boston Shootout, managed by the BABC. Globe schools correspondent Matty Wasserman stopped by to check out some elite hoops.
In a rarity, there were no milestones to report Saturday, so we’ll jump right into the biggest upset of the tournament thus far, plus the day’s biggest stars, coaching moves, college commitments, and our daily leaderboards.

1. The upsets
▪ One of the biggest stunners of the tournament probably shouldn’t have been. Just 10 days ago, Franklin girls’ lacrosse nipped Bishop Feehan, 9-8, in overtime.
On Saturday, the 12th-seeded Panthers paid another visit to Attleboro and the No. 5 Shamrocks, this time in the second round of the Division 1 tournament, once again left victorious, 11-8, making Feehan the highest-seeded team from any sport to falter thus far. The Panthers got six goals from senior captain Izzy Cross, and Clara Blongastainer scored twice, pulling her within two goals of 100 for her career.
“We kind of felt like an underdog, but also knew we were capable of winning,” said Franklin coach Kristin Igoe. “So we don’t really care about being the 12-seed, honestly.”
▪ In the does-it-even-count category was No. 17 North Reading boys’ lacrosse taking down No. 16 Nauset, 11-10, in a Division 3 matchup after rallying from down, 8-2, in the first half. Brendan Gazda notched a hat trick, Tony Tammaro added 5 points (two goals, three assists), and freshman Brayden Carlson picked the perfect time for his first two career goals.
2. Four stars
Brady Banks, Bourne/Mashpee — The Belmont Abbey-committed senior from Bourne compiled 6 points, scoring three goals with three assists in a 15-1 boys’ lacrosse first-round win over Mt. Greylock.
Emma LeMire, McCann Tech — The junior spun a one-hitter, striking out nine and walking two in a 5-1 Division 5 first-round win over Wareham.
Audrianna Pelkey, Mt. Greylock — The senior provided a pair of clutch knocks, crushing a first-inning homer before ending the game with a walkoff RBI single to secure a 4-3 preliminary-round softball win over Minuteman.
Max Yurtuc, Westfield — The junior, who rcently surpassed 1,000 career assists, had another 32 in a 3-0 Division 2 first-round boys’ volleyball win over Wakefield, adding 7 digs, 3 aces, 2 kills, and 1.5 blocks for the second-seeded Bombers.

3. Coaching carousel
Several prominent coaches are retiring:
▪ Mark Baldwin will be retiring as one of the state’s winningest baseball coaches when Hampshire’s season ends. The 39th-seeded Raiders, who already upset No. 26 Upper Cape, face No. 7 Seekonk in the first round.
Baldwin won 198 games at Northampton, the most in school history, but his heart was always at Hampshire, where he was a three-sport athlete (’82) before returning as baseball and soccer coach in the 1980s, basketball coach in the 1990s, and basketball, golf, and baseball coach since 2019.
Overall, Baldwin coached 33 years of high school baseball — 26 at the varsity level, including nine at Hampshire. His teams made 20 postseason appearances, won two league championships, and reached two Western Mass. semifinals. He’s won 253 games and counting and was a 2019 inductee into the Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
▪ BC High boys’ volleyball coach James Chen is stepping down after 10 seasons, eight as head coach. He helped the Eagles reach the tournament in all eight seasons, capturing the 2024 Catholic Conference title and a Division 1 semifinal appearance. Chen’s final game was Thursday’s 3-2 preliminary-round loss to Somerville.
▪ Also retiring is longtime Wachusett swim coach Jochen Welsch. Welsch, who was inducted into the Eastern Massachusetts Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association Hall of Fame in May, coached the Mountaineers for 25 years.
4. Commitment central
Bellingham junior Sophia Soto has committed to play women’s volleyball at Central Connecticut State. Soto, a Tri-Valley all-star, also plays for CMass Edge.
