No. 34 Andover’s gutsy 5-3 Division 1 win over No. 31 Brookline Friday evening was the perfect way to kick the baseball state tournament into gear.

The Golden Warriors snagged the lead in the top of the 11th inning, with sophomore Luke Solomon knocking in the go-ahead run with an RBI single and junior Kyle Olson adding to his tremendous pitching day with a run-scoring single for insurance, salvaging a preliminary-round win from the jaws of defeat.

“Unbelievable, these guys this year,” Andover coach Dan Grams said.

The Golden Warriors (11-10) trailed by a run in the bottom of the seventh before an error and a stolen base moved the tying run to third. Junior Luke Mikitka poked a single over the drawn-in infield to send the game to extras.

Ryan Cardillo then gave Andover the lead again in the top of the 10th with his second RBI of the day before the Warriors (7-14) clawed back — down to their final out, Wally Lawrence laced an RBI triple to left-center to tie it again.

If it was going to keep going blow-for-blow, Andover needed Solomon to come through in the 11th after Sam Feeley led off the frame with a double. He did.

“I saw the fastball outside and just stayed flat with my bat to go the opposite way,” Solomon said.

Olson fired eight innings, fanning 13 and scattering six hits. He went toe-to-toe with Brookline’s Nikolai Rabiner, who fanned nine in 6⅔ innings of three-hit ball.

“He’s one of the best in the state, no question,” Grams said.
