A year ago, as a junior at Westford Academy, Maddie Smith edged Concord-Carlisle senior Erika Redmond by a stroke in the MIAA North/Central/West girls’ golf sectional at The Haven in Boylston.

On Tuesday, Redmond’s younger sister, Sophie, a junior, fired a 2-under-par 69 at Ellinwood Country Club for a four-stroke win over Smith.

“We play in so many tournaments together, and it’s always back and forth,” said Redmond, who, like Smith, started on the 10th hole.

“My sister’s beaten her before, I’ve beaten her before, and then she beats us. It’s always such a fair matchup and she’s super nice, so it’s always fun to see her.”

Redmond led for most of the afternoon, recording four birdies against two bogeys. Throughout the day, she opted not to check the leaderboard , and even though it was a thought in the back of her mind, she did not learn of her win until her final ball was in the cup.

“I’ve had her since she was a freshman and I’ve seen her grow because of her tenacity and activity in and around the team,” said C-C coach Carl Sweeney of Redmond. “She’s recently been named one of our captains and we’re looking forward to many more good things this season from her.”

Longmeadow’s Cecily Henshon (74) was third, and Ashland’s Rebecca Kriegsman (77) fifth. The top 15 individuals (including ties) advanced to Tuesday’s state final at Indian Pond CC in Kingston. The South qualifier is Wednesday at Foxboro CC.

In the team tournament, Hopkinton (369) earned a 16-stroke win over Notre Dame-Worcester (385). Wellesley (389) also qualified for the state final.

Coming off a 13-0-2 regular season, its fourth as a varsity program, Hopkinton rode strong play from Gigi Linton (84), Reese Robledo (90), Leah Hong (92), and Bridget Wilk (103).

“To get into sectionals, and to play well enough to get through next week, and then to finish first is literally unbelievable,” said Hopkinton coach Bill Phaneuf. “These [girls] played great all year, we didn’t have any losses throughout the year and this team is such a special group of kids.”
