Monday’s MIAA tournament roundup: Gia Papa powers Dighton-Rehoboth girls’ lacrosse to Division 3 win

Gia Papa has a nose for the net.

The senior captain scored seven goals and added four assists, powering the 24th-seeded Dighton-Rehoboth girls’ lacrosse team to a 16-3, Division 3 preliminary-round victory over No. 41 Greater Lowell on Monday.

“She’s really good at reading the defense,” D-R coach Kara Bosco said. “She finds that right moment to make a sneaky cut and just go for it.”

Behind Papa’s contributions, Dighton-Rehoboth (11-6) earned its second tournament win in program history.

“They’re a close-knit team that just puts in a lot of effort every day, so they deserve every success that comes their way,” said Bosco.

Defensively, senior captain Angela Gabriel collected five ground balls and was key in keeping the ball out of D-R’s end. The Falcons sustained heavy pressure and peppered shots at Gryphons junior goalie Julia Dunfey (20 saves).

D-R plays at No. 9 Dover-Sherborn Tuesday (5:30 p.m.), seeking to advance past the round of 32 for the first time.

“We’re sure it’s not going to be an easy game, but we’re gonna try to do our homework and be as competitive as we can be,” said Bosco.

Apponequet 18, Pittsfield 4 — Senior Cece Levrault scored seven goals, leading the No. 23 Lakers (14-6) to a preliminary-round victory. Freshman Riley Lewis added four goals, sophomore Emma Borge scored three, and senior Amelia Menendez potted two. Junior Ashley Smith made seven saves.

Bishop Fenwick 11, Shawsheen 3 — Camille Yanofsky, Ada Zaccaria, and Allison Doherty all tallied twice as the No. 27 Crusaders (6-13) leaned on eight different goal scorers in a preliminary-round win. Cori McMeniman scored and had five draw controls, and goalie Cam Martinez made six saves.

Wilmington 10, Martha’s Vineyard 2 — Seniors Cate MacDonald (three goals, assist) and Leah Murphy (three goals) led the way for the No. 30 Wildcats (8-11) in a preliminary-round victory. Junior Emma Ebert added a goal and five assists, and senior goalie Makayla Maguire made eight saves.

Watertown 14, Tri-County 6 —Sophomore Tyler Foley netted seven goals, propelling the No. 31 Raiders (5-15) to a preliminary-round triumph. Senior Sophia Setouhi scored three goals and sophomore Gianna Venezia tallied two.

Division 2 State

Burlington 19, Worcester 5 — Junior Emma Steiner scored four goals, and sophomores Annabella Bilodeau and Mari Miceli added three apiece as the No. 26 Red Devils (7-12) spread the wealth in a preliminary-round win.
