Boston College, Northeastern, Holy Cross, Yale make 64-team field for NCAA Division 1 baseball tournament

New England will be well-represented in the NCAA Division 1 baseball tournament.

Boston College, Northeastern, Holy Cross, and Yale made the 64-team field, which was announced Monday. The Eagles earned an at-large bid, with the other gaining entry by winning their conference tournaments.

The top 16 seeds host regionals. During regionals, four teams compete in a double-elimination format until one team emerges.

In super regionals, best-of-threes determine which programs advance to the College World Series in Omaha.

BC (36-21) faces Liberty (41-19) on Friday at 2 p.m., in Athens, Ga. The Eagles, who enjoyed a renaissance in their third season under coach Todd Interdonato, finished fourth in the ACCbefore being bounced in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament by Miami.

Awaiting on the other side of the regional is No. 3 overall seed Georgia (46-12) and Long Island (30-20). The Bulldogs were the SEC regular-season and tournament champions and led Division 1 in home runs with 148. The Sharks won the NEC tournament for their fourth conference title.

Northeastern (38-20) draws No. 15 Kansas (42-16) in the Lawrence regional on Friday at 12 p.m. Franklin resident Ryan Geretyhit a walkoff single to secure the Huskies’ bid, winning the CAA in back-to-back seasons. Coach Mike Glavine is five wins short of 400 for his career. The Huskies have been busy on the basepaths, leading Division 1 with 210 stolen bases this season.

The Jayhawks have never before hosted a regional but won the Big 12 tournament for the first time in 20 years and captured the conference’s regular-season title for the first time in 77 years.

Arkansas (39-20) and Missouri State (34-19) are on the other side of the Lawrence regional.

Holy Cross (25-28) plays No. 6 overall seed Texas (40-13) on Friday at 1 p.m., in Austin. The Crusaders bested Bucknell in the Patriot League championship series to clinch their spot. The Longhorns will be making their 65th NCAA Tournament appearance, most all time. They are a top-eight national seed for the 10th time.

UC Santa Barbara (38-18) and Tarleton State (37-19) make up the other side of the Austin regional.

Yale (30-13-1) will take on No. 11 Oregon (40-16) in Eugene, Ore., Friday at 8 p.m. The Bulldogs defeated Brown in the Ivy League championship game, securing the league’s spot for the first time since 2017. The Ducks generate plenty of whiffs, striking out 608 this season. It’s their sixth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

Former Pac-12 foes Oregon State (43-12) and Washington State (30-26) comprise the rest of the regional.

UCLA (51-6) is the No. 1 overall seed. The Bruins won the Big Ten regular-season and postseason titles, and have not lost a series all year. Two-time Big Ten Player of the Year Roch Cholowsky, potentially the top pick in the upcoming MLB Draft, leads the Bruins.
