Globe Top 20 boys’ and girls’ tennis polls: Primed for the playoffs

After another dominant week to close the season, unbeaten Winchester holds onto the top spot in the Globe Top 20 girls’ tennis poll. The Red & Black enjoyed 5-0 victories over No. 11 Belmont, Reading, and Marblehead.

Second-ranked Newton South added another statement win to its résumé, defeating No. 6 Westford, 5-0, on Monday. Lexington leaps into the fourth spot to finish the season after fending off two difficult opponents: Belmont and No. 8 Arlington.

Another riser in the rankings was No. 14 Acton-Boxborough, which emerged, 3-2, in a battle with Division 1 title contender, Westborough, on Wednesday. The top new entrant was No. 13 Wellesley, who impressed with a 3-2 win against Westborough, and a 4-1 triumph over Natick, who held a spot in the Top 20 last week.

Also making the cut was No. 19 Manchester Essex, which posted an impressive 3-2 victory over No. 9 Andover on Monday.

Boys’ tennis

With the postseason here, the top of the Globe Top 20 boys’ tennis poll remains largely the same. Top-ranked Lexington closed out an undefeated regular season with 5-0 wins over Arlington and No. 15 Belmont.

Second-ranked Westford posted multiple impressive victories, topping No. 5 Lincoln-Sudbury, 3-2, on Saturday, and Belmont, 4-1, on Tuesday to clinch an undefeated season of their own.

Lincoln-Sudbury jumped up one spot after taking down No. 6 Weston, 3-2, on Tuesday, while Concord-Carlisle slipped three spots with 4-1 losses to Weston and No. 3 St. John’s Prep.

Eighth-ranked Winchester had a stellar week, posting victories against No. 16 BC High and No. 15 Belmont. Bishop Feehan headlines the new arrivals after a close loss to BC High and a 3-2 triumph over Mid-Wach power Shrewsbury.
