Friday’s 11 HS sports takeaways, including new coaches at Nantucket and Newman and a fresh football co-op
Just when you think there might be a quiet Friday heading into Memorial Day Weekend, with the regular season winding down, a few sports already wrapped, and the playoffs slated for next week.
No such luck.
Friday morning started with the girls’ lacrosse bracket release, and the boys’ and girls’ tennis seedings followed. Even before the games started, we had a new football coach at Nantucket, a new boys’ basketball coach at Newman, and a new football co-op between Millis and Norfolk Aggie. Scroll down to read about each.
Then the games began and we had five Top 20 softball and baseball teams lose, including No. 2 Taunton baseball watching its nine-game win streak snapped by Brody Bumila and Bishop Feehan, even though the ace’s damage was limited to his bat.
Toss in four softball walkoff wins, a Woburn boys’ volleyball record matched, a pair of two-homer games, a no-hitter, a Top 5 five-set boys’ volleyball thriller, and the Boston City League outdoor track championships, and you’ve got another action-packed day.

1. Milestones
▪ Woburn senior Trey Skumin matched the school record by racking up eight blocks while leading the Tanners to a 3-1 boys’ volleyball win over Lynn Classical. He added 15 kills.
▪ North Andover’s Lauren Lynch recorded both her 100th career hit and 100th career putout during a 5-4 loss to Andover.
Well NA threatens with runners on 1st and 3rd and 2 outs but falls short. Brown and Manzi each had 2H. Shout-out to CF Lynch for her 100th career putout to match her 100H. pic.twitter.com/yeRCPrZ3Q6

2. Crowning champions
▪ Roxbury Prep captured its first Charter School League baseball title, needing just five innings to beat Neighborhood House Charter, 17-7, with Rawen Perez leading the way with three runs scored and the win on the bump.
▪ Mt. Greylock boys’ lacrosse claimed its first Western Mass. Class C championship in three years with a 16-14 win over Hoosac Valley thanks to back-to-back goals from Brady Auger.
3. The upsets
Three softball teams ranked between No. 8 and No. 16 faltered, two against ranked opponents, while two baseball teams in the Top 11 took an ‘L’.
No. 8 Somerset Berkley was taken down by No. 11 Middleborough, 10-4, with Taylynn Robinson dominating with a three-run double and four RBIs total. No. 13 Silver Lake ran into Marshfield sophomore southpaw Caroline Arruda, who mowed down 10 batters for the No. 17 Rams in a 4-1 upset. Unranked Danvers rode five Taylor Landry RBIs to a 13-7 win over No. 16 Georgetown.
Meanwhile, St. John’s Prep’s Collin Thornburgh spun a gem to shut out Xaverian, 1-0, striking out 11 and getting just enough offense from Brady Baldassare in the Pete Frates ALS Awareness game.
The Brody Bumila show got the best of No. 2 Taunton for a second time this year, except this time it was his bat, not his arm, that did in the Tigers. Bumila’s two doubles helped No. 5 Bishop Feehan slip past Taunton, 3-0, and snap its nine-game win streak.
4. Best finishes
The walkoffs came with regularity on the softball diamond Friday: Central Catholic junior Chloe Salerno connected for a two-run walkoff homer to defeat Tyngsborough, 4-2. Sophomore Ginger Thompson rapped the walkoff hit, scoring Ava Johnson as Triton walked off Revere, 8-7. Peabody freshman Claire Welton socked the walkoff hit in an 18-17 win over Austin Prep. Lynn Classical sophomore Jayden Barragan delivered a walkoff RBI single for a 7-6 triumph over Swampscott.
In the non-walkoff classification, Middleborough senior Tylor Zamora mashed a go-ahead homer in the top of the eighth inning to give the 11th-ranked Sachems a 2-1 win over No. 8 Somerset Berkley, and Masconomet junior Sydnee Vocino rapped a clutch two-out, two-strike hit in the top of the seventh to send Masconomet past Newton South, 12-7.
5. Going, going, gone
Georgetown’s Maddie Grant carried a big stick, homering twice, including a grand slam, to join Chelmsford’s Aidan Brackett in Friday’s two-homer club.
West Bridgewater enjoyed four blasts, one each from Emma Croce, Jillian Foley, Liliana Morales, and Alanna Fidalgo. The rest of the day’s round-trippers belonged to: Chelmsford’s Gavin Corbo, Central Catholic’s Chloe Salerno, Middleborough’s Tylor Zamora, Bishop Stang’s Bubba Garcia, Triton’s Katie Clemenzi, Bishop Fenwick’s Odin Garron, Archbishop Williams’ Alessandra Cautilli, Newton South’s Jonny Hunt, Nobles’ Ava Decourcey, and Peabody’s Lizzy Bettencourt.
6. Five stars

Gabriella Davis, Tewksbury — The senior fired a no-hitter for the Redmen, striking out three in a 12-0 softball win over Lynnfield.
Bubba Garcia, Bishop Stang — The junior was a beast out of the No. 9 spot, blasting a homer and ripping a double, scoring two runs, and driving in five during the Spartans’ 10-3 baseball win over Apponequet.
Maddie Grant, Georgetown — The Bentley-bound senior did all she could in a 13-7 softball loss to Danvers, cranking a grand slam in the third inning, adding a two-run homer in the fifth, and finishing with six RBIs on the Royals’ seven runs.
Lidia Miedema, Beverly — The junior was practically a one-person band in beating Essex Tech, 3-0, fanning five in a two-hit shutout while collecting two hits, including an RBI single.
7. Coaching carousel
▪ Nantucket has elevated coach Fernando Jones to head football coach. Jones served as head coach at Cyrus Peirce Middle School from 2022-24 and served as an assistant coach for Nantucket’s varsity, working with running and defensive backs.
Hailing from Manchester, Conn., Jones graduated from Williston Northampton, where he played running back and cornerback, before playing at Hobart. Jones, the director of operations for the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club, has also served in the Army National Guard.
“Nantucket Public Schools believes coach Jones’s unique blend of coaching experience, leadership, and community involvement makes him an outstanding fit to lead the next chapter of Whaler Football,” the school wrote in a statement.
Jones follows Coreese “Reese” Everett, who spent four years at the helm, culminating in a 9-1 season in 2025. He stepped down to move off island for family reasons.

9. Here and there
▪ Millis and Norfolk Aggie announced a two-year football co-op agreement that will begin this fall. Millis will serve as the host school, welcoming Norfolk Aggie students to join the Mohawks.
The co-op, which has been approved by the MIAA and Mayflower and Tri-Valley leagues, comes a critical time for Millis, which was facing declining participation and no longer had a co-op with Hopedale. Thanks to the co-op, they plan to field a sub-varsity team.
“We are incredibly excited about this partnership and what it means for the future of football in Millis,” said Millis athletic director Derek Phinney in a statement. “Keeping our football tradition alive while prioritizing player safety is our top priority. By bringing in Norfolk Aggie student-athletes, we aren’t just saving our varsity program; we are rebuilding the foundation by offering sub-varsity levels again.
The new unified team will open its season Sept. 12 at Blackstone-Millville.
▪ Hingham will hold a track dedication Saturday to honor late coach Fred Jewett, who worked as an educator for 54 years and coached track at Hingham and Scituate for decades, winning 30 league and 11 state championships. He also had a 20-plus year career as a football coach.
The Hingham track will be named in his honor during a ceremony at 12:30 p.m., followed by a ribbon cutting and walk around the track.
